The hot air balloon was the first invention that allowed human beings to leave the ground, more than two hundred years ago — and remarkably, the way it flies has barely changed since.
Why flights take off early in the morning
Balloon flights are made early, usually around seven or eight in the morning depending on the season. At that hour the winds are lighter and far more predictable. Once the sun heats the ground more strongly, it can create sudden, irregular currents that make flying less comfortable, which is exactly why dawn is the ideal time to fly.
Weather and safety
There are days when the weather simply does not cooperate. Pilots are highly trained to decide whether conditions are right, and if a flight has to be postponed it is rescheduled with no extra charge. Ballooning has an excellent safety record: it is often said that if flying is the safest way to travel, then ballooning is the safest way to fly. The whole family can take part regardless of age — the only restriction is for pregnant women.
What to wear
A common worry is the cold at altitude, but a balloon does not climb high enough for any drastic change in temperature. The simple rule is this: wear what you would wear for a morning walk in the countryside where the take-off takes place. Comfortable clothing and flat, closed shoes are all you need.
Where will the balloon go?
A balloon follows no fixed itinerary — it is a balloon, not a plane. The wind decides the direction, and the pilot adjusts the altitude to find the most favourable currents and a good landing spot. That sense of letting the air guide you is part of the magic.
